ConScript Unicode Registry

The ConScript Unicode Registry was a volunteer project to coordinate the assignment of code points in the Unicode Private Use Areas (PUA) for the encoding of artificial scripts including those for constructed languages.[1] It was founded by John Cowan and was maintained by him and Michael Everson but has not been updated since 2008 and is no longer actively maintained. It has no formal connection with the Unicode Consortium.

The Under-ConScript Unicode Registry (UCSUR) is a continuation of the CSUR that has added 21 scripts to the agreement since its inception. Originally intended as a holding standard while the original maintainers of the CSUR took a break, the UCSUR has been the only actively maintained PUA agreement retaining the original CSUR allocations since 2008. It is run by Rebecca Bettencourt.[2]

The (U)CSUR also contain non-script character ranges for "hacks".[3][4][2]

Font support

Few fonts support ConScript Unicode specified code points (and two of the five listed are by the UCSUR maintainer herself):

  • Constructium, a proportional font based on SIL Gentium.[11] This font also has partial coverage of UCSUR characters.
  • Fairfax HD, a monospaced font intended for text editors and terminals.[12] This font also has complete coverage of UCSUR characters.
  • GNU Unifont, a bitmap font intended as a fallback font, includes CSUR/UCSUR characters in the separate Unifont CSUR package.[13] This font has near-complete coverage of UCSUR characters (coverage of the CSUR/UCSUR blocks in plane 16 is incomplete).
  • Horta[14]
  • Kurinto Font Folio[15]
