Vanderpump Rules is an American reality television series that premiered on January 7, 2013, on Bravo. Developed as a spin-off of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, it has aired nine seasons and features Lisa Vanderpump and the staff at her restaurants SUR Restaurant & Lounge, Pump Restaurant and Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar in West Hollywood, CA.

The series originally focused on Kristen Doute, Katie Maloney-Schwartz, Tom Sandoval, Stassi Schroeder, Scheana Shay, Jax Taylor, and Vanderpump. The most recent ninth season focused on Maloney-Schwartz, Sandoval, Shay, Vanderpump, Ariana Madix, Tom Schwartz, James Kennedy, Lala Kent, Charli Burnett, Brock Davies and Raquel Leviss. Of the original cast, Schroeder initially departed after the third before returning in the fifth and departing again after the eighth, along with Doute and Taylor. The remaining cast joined in later seasons; Madix and Schwartz in the third, Kennedy in the fourth, Kent in the sixth, and Burnett, Davies and Leviss in the ninth. Past cast members include: Brittany Cartwright (seasons 6-8), Max Boyens (season 8), Brett Caprioni (season 8), Beau Clark (season 8), and Dayna Kathan (season 8).

The success of the show resulted in the spin-off Vanderpump Rules: Jax & Brittany Take Kentucky, featuring former cast members Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright.[1]

Overview

Vanderpump Rules follows Lisa Vanderpump and the staff at her restaurants SUR Restaurant & Lounge, Pump Restaurant and Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar in West Hollywood, CA, as they work on building their futures in show business and become entangled in interpersonal drama. The series initially centered on new server Scheana and her relationships with established employees: Kristen, Katie, Tom Sandoval, Stassi and Jax.

Andy Cohen later announced during the February 4, 2013, Watch What Happens Live! episode that there would be a Vanderpump Rules reunion. The reunion was filmed on February 9, 2013.[2]

It was announced in April 2013 that the series had been renewed for a second season.[3] The second season debut was a two-hour crossover episode with the fourth-season premiere of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on November 4, 2013.[4] The second season reunion was filmed on January 10, 2014.[5]

Vanderpump Rules was renewed for a third season in April 2014.[6] The new season premiered on November 3, 2014.[7]

The show was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on November 2, 2015.[8]

The show was later renewed for a fifth season.[9] On September 26, 2016, the trailer and cast were announced, along with the premiere date of November 7, 2016.[10][11] On January 9, 2017, the tenth episode of the fifth season of Vanderpump Rules titled "Summer House Rules"[12][13] served as a cross-over preview to Summer House.[14][15]

On April 11, 2018, Bravo renewed the show for a seventh season,[16] which premiered on December 3, 2018.[17] During the seventh season, Vanderpump partnered with cast members Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz to open a new bar in West Hollywood, CA, called Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar.[18]

The eighth season premiered on January 7, 2020, with five new cast members joining the show.[19] The season reunion was recorded virtually, on Zoom, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 9, 2020, it was announced original cast members Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute were fired, following accusations by former co-star Faith Stowers, who claimed that the two women filed a false police report against her for a crime she did not commit. Additionally, it was announced Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni would not return for the ninth season following past racist Twitter posts.[20] On December 4, 2020, Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright were also fired.[21]

In December 2020, following the departures of several cast members and due to challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, production on season nine was put on hold 'indefinitely.' In April 2021, Dayna Kathan confirmed that she would not be returning for the upcoming ninth season while also suggesting that production on the series was to resume in the near future.[22]

On April 27, 2021, Bravo confirmed that Vanderpump Rules would return for a ninth season as well as confirming that Lisa Vanderpump, Katie Maloney-Schwartz, Scheana, Tom Sandoval, Ariana Madix, Tom Schwartz, James Kennedy, Lala Kent and Raquel Leviss would all be returning to the show as main cast members.[23] In May 2021, production had begun for Season 9 and premiered on September 28, 2021.

After Show (2015–16)

On November 6, 2015, Bravo premiered a talk show titled Vanderpump Rules After Show which features conversations between the cast members of Vanderpump Rules discussing the same week's events and answering questions about their lives both on and off the show. The talk show was hosted by Julie Goldman and Brandy Howard.

How They Got Here (2017)

On November 27, 2017 Bravo premiered Vanderpump Rules: How They Got Here, a recap of all five previous seasons of Vanderpump Rules before starting the sixth season on December 4, 2017.
