History

The boundaries of the current GRC consists of most part of the former Sengkang West SMC (with the rest going to Ang Mo Kio GRC), the whole of the former Punggol East SMC and the Sengkang Central ward carved out from Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. Sengkang West SMC and Punggol East SMC were previously helmed by Lam Pin Min and Charles Chong respectively, while Teo Ser Luck was the MP for the Sengkang Central ward.[2][3] Punggol East SMC would become the Sengkang East ward while Sengkang Central was to be split into Sengkang Central ward and Sengkang North ward.[4]

In the 2020 Singaporean general election, it became the second GRC to be represented by the Workers' Party (WP),[5] and the first GRC to fall directly into the opposition's hands upon its debut. Ng Chee Meng, who led the People's Action Party (PAP) team and was earmarked to helm the Sengkang North ward, became the third cabinet minister to lose in a GRC to the opposition. However, Ng Chee Meng, Raymond Lye, Lam Pin Min and Amrin Amin remained as Grassroots leaders for the respective constituencies from 2020 to 2022.

The new WP MPs also introduced new names for the wards. Sengkang Central was split into two and would be known as Buangkok (south) and Compassvale (north), Sengkang East as Rivervale and Sengkang West as Anchorvale. The PAP branches retained the old names, making this the only GRC which the WP and the PAP named the wards differently.[6]

Raeesah Khan resigned from Workers' Party on 30 November 2021. Similar to Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC of which a minority MP has left the GRC, no by-election will be called at all. The minority representation in Parliament will not be affected as there are only 26 of them.[7]

Town Council

Sengkang GRC is managed by the Sengkang Town Council.[8]
