Student life

NSEC Entrepreneurship Cell

The Entrepreneurship Cell of NSEC was founded on 21 August 2017.[15] The NSEC E-Cell deploys the learning, gathering and execution based system to develop and enhance the knowledge of the students in fields like startup and B-Plan development, higher education, job consulting, public speaking, personality grooming etc. Projects have been initiated such as hosting a platform called TechTrends to discuss and work on the newer trends in technology, thus working in projects and picking up internships. The main aim was to get a strong and concrete student profile for all college students to prepare them from social challenges. They hosted the Hult Prize event on campus on 11th Nov, 2017.

The NSEC E-cell started on campus the NSEC Campus Diaries which was the first ever educational and entertainment based YouTube v-log of NSEC.

Phoenix, the Official Tech Club

Phoenix logo

The history of PHOENIX, the official Tech Club of the college, dates back to 2006, when seven students formed a platform that would think beyond the academic courses that everyone studies in college. Thus began Phoenix — the Tech Club. Today, every student of NSEC is essentially a member of Phoenix and the club is well known in other tech colleges of the state. The functioning of Phoenix stands on its various pillars: The PR Team, the Creative Team, the Database Team, the Web Team, the C Team, the Photography Team etc. Today, besides organising the three big events (Avenir – the annual Tech Fest, Brainstormer – The Inter College Quiz Competition and Kurukshetra – the Intra College Debate Competition) Phoenix holds forums. Presently these are: The C Forum, The Robonix Forum, The SSPD forum and the Web Designing Forum. "Come, Let's Rise", is the motto of the club[16]

College Events

Apart from academic events, the college calendar has a number of other major events:

Annual Tech Fest

The Annual Tech Fest Avenir is one of the earliest Tech Fests of Kolkata was set up with help from Kshitij of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.[17] The tech fest has seen participants from almost all major engineering colleges of West Bengal. It started in 2003 with a participation of 100 people. Over the years it has grown enormously with Avenir 2014 seeing participants count of over 4000 from all major engineering colleges of the state but organised once in 4 years.[18]

Reunions

In the 20 years since its inception, there has never been a formal alumni association of the college, nor any formal alumni reunions. However, since 2015, various departments, on their initiative, have set up formal alumni associations and have held reunions/interactions with alumni of the department.

  • Melange - CSE Alumni Meet: The annual alumni meet of the department of Computer Science and Engineering organized by the CSE Alumni Association since 2015.[19]

Student Organisations

The college had once been a hotbed of student politics in the early years of the New Millennium. There was a prominent student body on the campus, affiliated to the Students' Federation of India who used to interact with the college management to negotiate student rights and general improvements on infrastructure and campus recruitment. Since 2011, there have been no student organisations, apart from the student-founded Tech Club Phoenix and the Departmental Alumni Associations formed by the students in some of the departments.

ECE Alumni Association

The ECE Alumni Association

The ECE Alumni Association [20] is a voluntary organization of the faculty, ex-students and present students of the department. It was formed to foster enhanced interaction between the former and present students of the department. The association organizes seminars/workshops/talks all around the year where prominent ex-students from around the world are invited back to campus. The Association also organizes its annual reunion, "Homecoming" between February and April every year. Since 2017, several alumni funded scholarships have been established through the association to support academically gifted students from the department in their research and professional development.

CSE Alumni Association

The CSE Alumni Association is a platform for Alumni, Students & Faculty of CSE department to connect & interact. It was formed to engage the CSE department as well as its global community to support and advance the program's excellence. The association organizes different alumni activity like seminars/talks all around the year.[21] The Association also organizes its annual reunion, "Melange" in the month of October every year.[22]

Aikatan: EIE Alumni Association

Aikatan, meaning 'Harmony', is the official Alumni association of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering department of Netaji Subhash Engineering College.[23] It was founded in 2014 to promote interaction among the alumni and the students of the Instrumentation department. The association organizes its annual reunion, "Samhar" in March every year since 2015.

Alumni

The majority of students from the college are placed in the software industry. A few students choose the core engineering sectors.[24] Many students opt for higher education, pursuing the likes of Masters/PhD or MBA in institutes of India and abroad. Several NSEC graduates have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs as well as agents of social change by joining the coveted Teach for India Fellowship Program and Child Rights and You (CRY).
