Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College

The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, abbreviated as JGEC, is a premier public institute for quality education in India. Established on 7 August 1961, the college has produced many talented engineers till date. It holds the distinction of being the fifth oldest engineering college in West Bengal.

It is an Autonomous college fully owned by Government of West Bengal and affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. The courses conducted by JGEC have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). JGEC is also a NAAC accredited institute.

History

JGEC Central building in Initial years was under the University of Calcutta. For the period between 1963 and 1999, the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal, which handed over the rich mantle of technical excellence to the West Bengal University of Technology. Founded under the West Bengal University of Technology Act, 2000.

In 2012, the institution was granted complete autonomy by the University Grants Commission, India, thus giving it the freedom to set its own curriculum and manage its own finances.

In 2009 The Telegraph ranked Jalpaiguri Government Engineering college to be 3rd among the engineering colleges in the state of West Bengal in factors like infrastructure, placement record and faculty.[2]

Admission Procedure

The admission procedure for the various programmes at JGEC ensures that only the very best of students make it to the campus. The admission to various programmes is carries out through the following highly competitive national level Examinations.

UG Programmes

  1. WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) conducted by West Bengal Joint Entrance Board for admission in Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech)
  2. JELET (Joint Entrance Examination for Lateral Entry) conducted by West Bengal Joint Entrance Board for admission in lateral entry in 2nd year (3rd semester) of the four year course of Bachelor Degree in Technology.

PG Programmes

  1. PGET (Post Graduate Entrance Test) Conducted by PGET Board as constituted by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal for admission in Masters of Technology (M.Tech)

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was introduced in year 2000 in the college with a motive to meet the need of the state to provide quality graduates in growing IT industry. Inspite of having relatively less number of spent years in the college to showcase, the department of CSE prides itself in gaining relatively higher success than all departments already. Through being one of the younger departments of the institute, it has shown excellent growth in the recent years and has produced a pool of quantity engineers, contributing to the pride of the institute. CSE embodies the university's tradition and culture of imparting excellence and quantity in engineering education.

Information Technology

The Information Technology Department is one of the newest departments of the institute, established in the year 2000 to meet the emergent need of teaching and learning IT and to cater to the demands of the industry. The department aims to provide students with a strong scientific background in Information Technology so that they make a solid impression wherever they go - be it in the field of research or industry. The department provides sound theoretical and practical knowledge to the students to make them efficient computer engineers through well-equipped Labs. The laboratories are equipped with well-configured desktop computers, servers. All desktop machines are equipped with software like Oracle 9i, MatLab-13, UNIX / Linux, Visual Studio and JDK. All laboratories have internet facilities along with a departmental library to aid the students with required textbooks.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established in the year 2000. The Department is equipped with modern laboratories and has faculties with diversified fields of interest. The expertise of the faculty with the support of the other staff prepares the students to work in the global multicultural environment. The graduates of the Electronics & Communication Stream have been selected by some of the leading software companies as well as core industrial sectors. The Department not only aims to make students technically sound and knowledgeable but also to nurture their wisdom and make them a better and responsible human being. Our students are encouraged to continue to pass on the skills which they have developed during their stay at this department to the whole of the world for a better society.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering Department started its journey from the very inception of the institute in 1961-1962 and continues to serve the society by producing quality engineers capable to make impact to its evolution from an industrial-based to knowledge-based economy. Over the last six decades, the department has been producing competent engineers who worked and hold key positions in many major industries and academia around the globe. Electrical Engineering Program is enriched with theoretical engineering concepts & understanding and practical demonstration and is designed to meet the modern trends in the field of electrical technology, encompassing wider technological perspective, helping students to face the practical problems in the field of engineering in a better way. A new initiative has been taken in Electrical Engineering Department named as TekTrons to organize various technical activities and skill development programs for our students as per Industry 4.0 requirements with the help our Faculties, Alumnus and various professional bodies.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the oldest departments of the institute, established in 1961 with a student strength of about 400. While managing this increased strength which is an urgent need of the nation, the department is committed to the well being and all round development of its students. The department currently provides the following programmes: B.Tech. In Mechanical Engineering and M.Tech in Production Engineering and Ph.D. The ME department has a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty, good infrastructure and lab facilities to provide the students with the necessary industrial skills.

The Civil engineering Department stated its journey from the inception of the college in 1961. Since then department has been striving to produce quality Civil Engineers for the country as well as to serve the society in various development activities. Further, the Department has valuable possession of well qualified as well as devoted Faculty members recruited by West Bengal Public Service Commission. Students graduating with the Bachelor's Degree in this department as provided with the exposure to the latest analysis and designing software like AutoCAD-2D/3D and Staad Pro Analysis. The Department has well equipped laboratories have modern equipments.

Student life

JGEC Hostels

JGEC provides five hostels on campus to accommodate about 75 % of its students. Out of them, four are for male boarders and the last for female boarders. The hostels are as follows:

  • Hostel 2 (J. C. Bose Hall)
  • Hostel 3 (S. N. Bose Hall)
  • Hostel 4 (N. C. Bose Hall)
  • Hostel 5 (Ladies' Hostel)

Each hostel has its own mess managed by own duly elected mess committee which works under the hostel superintendent. Applications for hostel boarding are accepted at the time of admission.

Clubs

JGEC offers students the opportunity to take part in the various clubs and give them a chance to be a member of those clubs according to their interest. It's the diversity of JGEC students. The students are not only experts on educational background but also experts on so many other fields. These clubs make our students' lives better in social, educational, physical and many other fields.

Centre For Innovation

CFI is the Technical Society of JGEC. It has been promoting technical knowledge of the students since its establishment (2010). Along with conduction of classes, CFI deals with projects and provides adequate support to carry out the same. CFI is not only one of the most active clubs in JGEC but also receives immense support and guidance from the faculty as well as alumni members.

CONQUER Divide & Conquer is a group of enthusiastic coders from JGEC. Here, we not only introduce coding to students who have never given it a thought, but also provide mentorship and assistance to all the students throughout their journey. JYOTI

"JYOTI -A Ray Of Hope" is a free night school for under-privileged students, run by the students of JGEC. It was started in the year 2010 .Students from classes 3 to 10, come to Jyoti for gaining knowledge and to get a proper pathway for their studies. Jyoti has also started the preparation for Navodaya Scholarship exam for students of class 5 to 10. Activities : Regular Surveys, Health camps, performances by students in cultural events.

Entrepreneurship Development Cell

The motive of Entrepreneurship Development Cell, JGEC is to promote entrepreneurship, start ups and provide a platform for students in and beyond the campus to portray their capabilities in the techno-business industries.

Trekker's Club

Trekker's Club is one of the popular clubs where students have achieved remarkable feats over the years with some of them going to Goecha La , Singalila Ridge, Sandakphu etc.

Pandulipi - Magazine club

The Magazine Club of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College is one of the biggest writing platforms in North Bengal. It provides a platform for all young writers to think and pen down their thoughts.

Space and Aeronautics Activity Centre

Space and Aeronautics Activity Center(SAAC) is an initiative of a few energetic students from Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College who dream of reaching space someday! We are an active community of students showcasing and testing our skills in projects ranging from Model Rocket Propulsion to developing Flight Guidance System. We dream about growing to a team as strong as NASA, ISRO or SpaceX in the future and bring significant help to the challenges of space. Also, we want to make it as the first step for beginners interested in Space Science, and collaborators from all over India.

SPORTS CLUB

The Sports club offers to all of our college students to continue their physical activities. responsible for organising all competitive events like Annual Sports, Cricket premier League, Football tournament, Volleyball tournament etc.

Calliphony - Music Club

Calliphony is the music club at JGEC. It was established in the year 2001 with the objective to bolster a platform for the students to showcase their talent of vocal and instrumental music and has since been the most prolific non-academic club in our college.

Azantrik - Drama & Short Film Society

Drama Club of JGEC is designed for students interested in learning more about the aspects of theater. This includes learning stage terminology working on acting skills. writhing stories and designing plots We try to perform, learn and relish at the same time

Rotaract Club

Rotaract Club of JGEC was chartered on 15th November, 2015. This Club is sponsored by Rotary Club of Jalpaiguri. With a strength of 150+ members throughout the four years, Rotaract Club of JGEC is one of the most active clubs in the campus. This club takes several initiatives for the welfare of the society.

Activities : Blood Donation Camp, Literacy day project, River cleaning project etc.

Wavezz - Dance club

"Wavezz" believes that dance is the expression of soul through lines of the body and pure movement. It is there to encourage those with a passion in the field of dancing by providing them a platform to improvise and showcase their talents plays a very important role in most of the college events with their breathtaking performances.

Art Club of JGEC

The Art Club of JGEC is a place for artistic minds to hone in on their skills, develop their techniques and collaborate with other artists like themselves, create bonds with the community through the arts, and learn how to work together through group projects that will beautify the college and community.

Festivals

T-shirt painting competition in JECLAT 2016

JGEC has festivals like JECLAT and Sristi. JECLAT[3] is the annual socio-cultural fest of JGEC. It is held near the time of "Holi" festival to organize an event called Rangotsav on the day of Holi.

JECLAT includes social and cultural competitions like Wall Painting competition, T-shirt painting competition, Sudoku, Creative writing, Roadies, Treasure Hunt, Chitrayan[4] (photography & art exhibition and competition), Damsheraz (dumb charades), Dance Fest[5] (inter-college dance competition), Music Fest[6] (inter-college music competition), Band Blast[7] (band music contest), Elementary[8] (puzzle, quiz, etc. online contests) in addition to stage shows (known as Social night) in the final night of the week-long cultural fest has some of the most powerful performances of vocals and beats from renowned artists and Bollywood chartbusters and pop songs are hosted throughout the night.

The magnitude of JECLAT is huge and attracts an admirable participation from many colleges.[9]

Alumni

JGEC has various Alumni Associations set up at different places. The Alumni Association conducts seminars,[10] and workshops at campus, arrange platform for sponsoring scholarships[11] and sporting events around the whole year. Prominent educationalists and professionals visit campus during seminars organized by the Alumni Association. The Association works in close association with students of JGEC and the college authorities. The Alumni Association also helps the family of distressed Alumni or current students of JGEC financially through 'Distressed Fund' of the Association. Inter-class cricket tournament-'El Equipo',[12] is one of the sporting event at JGEC organized and sponsored by the Alumni Association.
