Development
The Government of Jharkhand had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in 2013, to develop the airport, to promote religious tourism in the state.[6]
The government later signed a tripartite MoU with the AAI and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in March 2017, to develop the airport for non-military use of Airbus A320 category aircraft.[7]
AAI proposed to build the airport at a cost of ₹ 400 crore.[8] It includes the construction of the runway, having a length of 2,500 m (8,200 ft) and 45 m (148 ft) wide, construction of a 4,000-square-metre (43,000 sq ft) terminal building to handle 200 passengers per hour, an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, an apron for two Airbus A320s, taxiways and an isolation bay. The terminal building will have six check-in counters and two arrival belts with a peak hour handling capacity of 200 passengers. The design of the terminal building will be inspired from the Baidyanath Temple's structure, and there will be paintings of Adivasi art, handicrafts and local tourist sites inside the airport. A DVOR/DME navigational facility is also planned. Construction commenced in January 2018.[9][10]
As of December 2021, the airport is 95% completed, with the terminal's both exterior and interior work finished. The runway, approach road and ATC tower works are also completed. A team from Netaji Shubhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata visited the airport in the first week of December, and successfully conducted the runway test. The airport has received most of its license for operations. Godda MP Nishikant Dubey met PM Narendra Modi, requesting him to visit Deoghar for the airport's inauguration.[11]
As of February 2022, the airport is completed, with currently the ATC testing being underway. The airport is expected to become operational in March 2022, likely after the festival of Holi.[12]
As of April, Deoghar Airport has received its license issued by Office Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India, dated on 11th April, 2022 for regular use of Airport for flight operations under public use category. Inauguration date expected to be declared soon.[13]
