The government-owned-air-carrier was previously under the ownership of Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. It was incorporated on 30 March 2007 as the National Aviation Company of India Limited by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India under the United Progressive Alliance administration to oversee the merger of Air India, Indian Airlines and Alliance Air.[3] The National Aviation Company was a government owned company that functioned under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It was renamed as Air India Limited on 26 October 2010.[4]

Air India Limited was handed over by Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India to Talace Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle of Tata Sons under the tenure of National Democratic Alliance administration as a move for privatisation and monetization of ailing Public sector undertakings in India. On 8 October 2021 Tata Sons paid 18,000 crore (US$2.4 billion) to Government of India and Tata will also assume 15,300 crore (US$2.0 billion) of Air India Limited's debt as per the transfer deal.[5][6] The remaining 46,262 crore (US$6.1 billion) of Air India Limited's debt was also transferred to AIAHL.[7][8]

Upon completion of the merger on 26 February 2011 there is now one primary airline, Air India, with two divisions :- (Alliance Air and Air India Express) carriers providing regional and low-cost point-to-point services. AIL carriers connect 93 destinations (60 domestic and 33 international) in 24 countries as of February 2011.

One of the subsidiaries of Air India Limited is Hotel Corporation of India. Air India Express, and Alliance Air are divisions of Air India Limited.[9] In 2013, it split its engineering and cargo businesses into two separate subsidiaries, AI Engineering Services Ltd (AIESL) and AI Airport Services Limited (AIASL).[10]
