The company began its historic journey as a telecommunication company and launched its first prepaid SIM card in 2009, and was the first Malaysian Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) to be listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2011. Currently, their mobile services are marketed under ONEXOX brand and have approximately 2.5 million subscribers.

History

2009 – 2019: Launch, Expansions and Partnerships


Telecommunication

In January 2009, XOX launched its first prepaid SIM card. A Hybrid Plan (Prepaid + Postpaid) was later introduced in the second half of 2010. In 2012, XOX launched its SIM-FREE subscription plan which was followed by the #PrepaidPlus plan known as XOX-Voopee in 2013.[1] In April 2016, the plan was then discontinued and was replaced by ONEXOX Prepaid as part of the efforts to consolidate product divisions.

As An Official Mobile Technology Partner

In 2013, XOX was appointed by the Penang State Government Information Division as the official Mobile Technology Partner. A year later, the Badminton Association of Malaysia appointed XOX as its official Mobile Technology Partner.[2]

XOX FA Cup Final 2015

XOX was the title sponsor of 2015 Football Association of Malaysia FA Cup.[3]

Partnership with Galaxy

XOX also partnered with Galaxy Group Sdn Bhd to deliver world-class entertainment to Malaysians, bringing in famous icons and idols from the music industry.On 28 February 2016, XOX partnered with Galaxy[4] to bring in the famous Hong Kong singer, Eason Chan for his Another Eason’s Life in Malaysia concert.[5] On 21 May 2016, South Korean pop idol Jung Ji-Hoon (popularly known as Rain) was brought in as part of The Squall World Tour 2016. Within the same month, Hong Kong Cantopop queen Sammi Cheng was brought in for her ‘Touch Mi World Tour 2016’ on 26 May 2016. The Hong Kong Cantopop queen was invited again for her ‘Hill雄群星汇’ on 18 June 2016.

As the First Syariah-compliant Prepaid Telco

In 2016, ONEXOX partnered with Bank Islam to launch the Visa Debit Card-i ONEXOX, making ONEXOX Prepaid Malaysia’s first Syariah-compliant prepaid brand.[6] Users are able to enjoy benefits, such as the use of TAP Mobile Banking-i (TAP), Malaysia’s first mobile banking service by Bank Islam that is equipped with an innovative chip technology that allows users to perform their banking needs from the comfort of their mobile phones without using the Internet.

Engagement in the Sporting World

The company was also engaged in the Malaysian sporting industry, having signed national badminton icon Dato Lee Chong Wei as an XOX ambassador in February 2016, and a collaboration with the Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club (JDT) in April 2016. XOX launched a limited-edition Southern Tigers Club Prepaid starter pack to keep fan clubs updated on the football club’s current happenings and information.[7] Subsequently, XOX also signed on as the main sponsor for the Petaling Badminton Club (PBC) to support the development of new local badminton talents.

2016 Olympic Reward #WiraMalaysia

In conjunction with the Rio 2016 Olympics Game (Brazil), XOX dedicated cash rewards to Olympic Game medallists and their coaches as an appreciation for their efforts and performance, totaling RM315,000.[8]

Going Fully Digital with eSIM

From 2017 to 2019, XOX shifted to high gears with their digital development and launched the ONEXOX BLACK in 2018 and Malaysia’s first fully digitized XOX eSIM; an embedded SIM technology. In 2019, the service expanded to cater to a wider range of subscribers. To present, XOX prides on their #BURNPROOF dictum, which automatically carries forward any unused data, call minutes, and SMS without any forfeiting.[9]

Sponsorship for the Malaysian Cub Prix (2017 – 2019)

XOX is one of the main sponsors for Malaysian Cub Prix from 2017 to 2019. It is an effort to nurture young talented Malaysian riders to be future world champions.[10]

Expanding Across the Sea

In 2018, XOX expanded its operations in Indonesia with a joint venture agreement with Perkumpulan Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), EH Integrated Systems Sdn Bhd and PT Nusantara Digital Telekomunikasi, focusing on telecommunications, mobile application services (Voopee) and e-wallet services in Indonesia.[11]

As XOX prepares to launch the company deeper into the digital ecosphere; to introduce 5G usage and engage a more futuristic direction, they managed to gain an investment boost from KEY Alliance Group Bhd in 2020, thus making the latter the largest shareholder in the technology company.

On July 16, XOX’s subsidiaries, XOX Media Sdn Bhd, inked a partnership agreement with Wetek Technology (M) Sdn Bhd to provide microfinancing services to its 2.2 million subscribers. The service will also be available to individuals and small businesses that lack access to conventional banking and related services by populating XOX’s eWallet for usage in XOX Digital Marketplace. Wetek, which has operations in Vietnam, has budgeted RM1 billion to finance low-income Malaysians.

Partnership with the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team (2019)

In 2019, XOX was in a partnership with ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team, a Malaysian-Spanish motorcycle racing team that competed in 4 events in 2019 which were Malaysian Cub Prix, FIM ARRC, FIM CEV Repsol and FIM Moto2.[12]


2020 – present: Taking Larger Strides Toward the Future


Venturing into the Digital Events & e-Sports Scene

In November 2020, XOX collaborated with Macpie Bhd, led by its Executive Director Koo Kien Kiet; a former professional Malaysian badminton player to originate, organize, and execute a mobile e-sports league that is the first of its kind in Malaysia.[13]

Collaboration with Cheetah & Increasing XOX’s e-Commerce Presence

In March 2021, XOX entered a tripartite collaboration with fashion partner, Cheetah Holdings Bhd (Cheetah) and Lambo Group Bhd (Lambo) to create the Cheetah Online Store that allows online purchasing and provides customers with bundled discounts and transaction benefits and at the same time focusing on online business and the youth market.[14]

In the efforts to create a sustainable digital future in Malaysia, XOX is eager to introduce a virtual cycle of innovations to connect and engage with people, all housed within its very own connected environment.

TRAX: Implementing Digital Integrity with Block-Chain

With the rise of online and digital-based transactions, there exist difficulties in ensuring the movement of goods and more between online to offline. TRAX is XOX’s latest service in development to provide a means to a safer, more secure method of tracking the logistics of goods and services from point to point powered by the technologies of block chain. The first implementation of TRAX will coincide with the BLACK MARKET e-commerce platform as well as XOX’s upcoming e-wallet design.[15]

ADX: Rewarding Patience and Time

Action Driven eXchanges (ADX)is a specially designed loyalty program implemented to engage with XOX’s user base to earn rewards through a host of activities via the BLACK App. From watching videos to completing surveys, to even playing games on it, they are rewarded with points that could be used to redeem for more DATA, talk time, and other benefits.

XOX Tech City: Vending Kiosk Catered to Your Needs

In efforts to provide users and consumers to XOX’s range of services, special designated vending kiosks were implemented to give them a fully automated retail experience. With XOX's Tech City, users and consumers are provided with as much coverage as possible with access to XOX’s products and services with its integrated network of operations.[16]

XOX’s commitment to empowering the people have them constantly exploring technological trends for new opportunities to benefit them. From researching on implementations of AI[17] with IoT, to enhancing the existing telecommunication services with 5G,[18] they are at the forefront of enabling the latest innovations to better serve their users and consumers.


Cultivating a Digital Future


Telecommunication Services

ONEXOX Black[19] is an XOX plan that implements the first digitized eSIM in Malaysia and allows subscribers to enjoy features such as carrying forward unused data, call balances and SMS, while sharing data with fellow XOX users at the same time. ONEXOX Prepaid currently offers the longest validity period of 28 months upon activation, as well as the Season Pass that stores data, talk time and SMS.[20]


Digital Ecosystem


TRAX

In August 2020, XOX entered a strategic partnership with Alipay Labs, an affiliate company of Ant Group to collaborate on blockchain-based technology solutions in the region.[21] Under the partnership, XOX and AntChain also planned to introduce Creator ID, built on the AntChain Digital Asset solution, to enable digitization of real assets on blockchain, such as copyright, cultural art, etc, leading to a more efficient transfer and utility of assets in both online and offline scenarios. Through TraX's strategic partnership with AntChain, connecting products with users will be done seamlessly and efficiently, leaving no room for discrepancies that allows for a transparent and immutable solution for all.[22]

BLACK App

The BLACK App is an account management app that can be used by XOX subscribers to manage their BLACK and ONEXOX Prepaid accounts. On 4 November 2019, XOX discontinued the MyXOX app and rebranded it as the new BLACK App. The BLACK app can perform all the functions of the MyXOX App and more, so users will not have difficulties in managing their accounts and can easily adapt to the BLACK app while enjoying better deals.

ADX – Action Driven eXchanges

Action Driven eXchanges (ADX) is a rewards-based feature available on the BLACK App. The feature allows users to earn ADX Points by completing an action (e.g. watching ads, completing surveys, playing games, etc). ADX is accessible to all XOX Mobile subscribers on the BLACK App as a value-added service in exchange for their time.[23]

XOX BLACK Market

The only line management with its own internal marketplace. As part of the XOX digital revolution to provide subscribers with a holistic digital ecosystem, the XOX Black Market is a unique e-commerce platform[24] that can be accessed through the BLACK App or XOX website, for XOX subscribers to purchase a diversified range of product listing that comes with attractive discounts and promotions every month. While currently only exclusive to XOX subscribers, the platform is projected to be available to the public by 2022. It is also a means to help the community to market their goods or products on its exclusive e-commerce platform.

XOX City Concept Store

The XOX City is a concept store that aims at bridging the gap between information needed by the customer and information provided by the merchant, by integrating them with the current XOX ecology. This service allows XOX customers to make purchases online and collect their orders through the unmanned SpaceX AI vending machines that are stationed at various locations all over Klang Valley. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology uses facial recognition or thumbprint recognition to profile customers before processing their orders on the spot. Customers are also given additional recommendations based on their spending habits and history, thus giving the customers a personalized and seamless shopping experience.

Fintech – XOX e-Wallet

Through the AI ecosystem, XOX is promoting the usage of its e-Wallet to consumers and ePartners (members of the ePartnership Program) in a stable and safe financial environment while providing microfinancing to assist entrepreneurs with their businesses. With this service, anyone can participate as a dealer where buyers will be able to purchase products and make payments through the XOX e-Wallet.[25]

ePartnership Program

The ePartnership Program (ePP)[26] is a specially crafted system for Malaysians to earn extra income to sustain their daily lives. With the ePP, individuals who become ePartners will be able to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills and generate potential earnings through the program’s diversified product listing. XOX initiated the ePP to ensure that Malaysians will be able to participate in a harmonized digital ecosystem where they will have access and outlet to sell multiple choices of product to earn income through a new economy.

XOX Cloud Solutions

XOX offers online cloud services that provide free 3GB cloud storage upon registration. Users are allowed to upload, submit, store, search, view, send and receive content via URL link of the document to third-party recipients. Document tagging is supported to allow for the searching of desired documents stored. All contents belong entirely to the respective users as XOX Cloud do not claim ownership of the content stored, including any text, data, information, and files that have been uploaded, shared, or stored in their XOX Cloud accounts.[27]


Marketing and Activities


Dealer Affiliate Program

XOX Mobile Sdn Bhd, one of the few subsidiaries by XOX Bhd, launched a nationwide campaign that saw the telco creating 20,000 new jobs through its Online Dealer Affiliate Programme.[28] Using the referral method that allows dealers to gain more customers without having to keep any products. Simply by sharing unique QR codes with potential customers, XOX dealers can have limitless potential income throughout the program.

#JomBantu

The #JomBantu[29] is a joint initiative set up by XOX and ONEXOX that aims to help Malaysian students struggling with their PdPR learning due to internet connection limitations. Every month, XOX subscribers can choose to contribute a certain amount of data which will have the total be accumulated and distributed to students who require internet connection for their classes and learning. This initiative aims to help empower the younger and future generations of Malaysia.

Jaringan Prihatin

In accordance with the Malaysian government initiative, this program offers smartphone subsidy up to RM300 to the eligible B40. In addition, XOX has taken up the initiative by giving out a few attractive offer plans to its subscriber base to further ease their burden.[30]
