Vourvoura

Vourvoura (Greek: Βούρβουρα) is a village in the municipal unit of Skiritida, Arcadia, Greece. It is situated in the northwestern part of the Parnon mountains, at 1,000 m above sea level. In 2011, it had a population of 252. It is 5 km west of Agios Petros, 5 km north of Karyes (Laconia) and 22 km southeast of Tripoli.

History

Vourvoura was under control of the Spartans starting in the year 750 BC up until the year 371 BC in which Thebean General Epaminondas Defeated the Spartan army.

Vourvoura was then under Thebean control until 337 BC in which it was put under the Macedonian Empire followed by the Roman Empire in 146 BC up until 330 AD.

Vourvoura was then under control of the Byzantine Empire between the years of 330 AD to 1460 AD. 7 years after the Fall of Constantinople the region around modern day Vourvoura was captured by the Ottomans in April of 1460.

Vourvoura was then liberated by the Greek resistance on the 27th of March 1821 2 days after the start of the Greek Revolution

Vourvoura was captured by German forces on the 28th of April 1941.

During the Greek civil war Vourvoura and other surrounding villages in Arcadia and the Peloponnese fell under the control of the Andartes between 1946 - 1949
