He killed Vikramaditya Singh and usurped the throne. He also attempted to kill the 14-year-old brother of Vikramaditya Singh, Udai Singh, but Panna Dai replaced Prince Udai Singh with her son Chandan, who was killed by Vanvir. Vanvir then declared himself to be the ruler of Mewar and Chittor.

In 1540, when Udai Singh was 18 years old, he attacked Chittorgarh with the help of several Samantas together with Akhey Raj Songara, the ruler of Pali and Udai Singh's father-in-law and Rao Kumpa Rathore. The armies of Vanvir and Udai Singh met at the battlefield of Mavli (south-west of Chittorgarh). Vanvir was decisively defeated in the battle. It is unclear whether he was killed during the battle, sent into exile or executed right after it. Udai Singh was crowned the 12th Rana of Mewar.
