Uberaba

Uberaba (Portuguese pronunciation: [ubeˈɾabɐ]) is a city in the state of Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian Highlands at 2,575 feet (823 metres) above sea level on the Uberaba River, and 418 km (260 miles) away from the state capital, Belo Horizonte.[3][4] The city status was granted in 1856, and its name comes from the Tupi language meaning "bright water". As of 2020 the population was 337,092 inhabitants.

History

The settlement was established by its founder Major Eustaquio in the early 19th century, being part of the former territory of the State of Goiás until 1816. The village served as the stopping point for merchants, and migrants travelling between the inland areas when the gold mines in the east were exhausted.

Uberaba was raised to parish in 1820 then formally named as a city in 1856.

Mogiana Railway reached the city in 1889, improving the local development.[5]

The city also comprises the district of Peirópolis, a palaeontological site located in the rural area of the city. It currently holds the Palaentological Research Center – Llewellyn Ivor Price (pt: Centro de Pesquisas Paleontológicas – Llewellyn Ivor Price), and a museum dedicated to the fossils discovered in the area, named in honor of Brazilian paleontologist Llewellyn Price.[6]

Nowadays, large events of cattle breeding and genetic improvement take place in Uberaba.[7]

Geography

Climate

Uberaba's climate is Tropical (Aw) according to Köppen and Geiger. The average temperature for the year is 21.9 °C (71.4 °F). The highest recorded temperature is 40.2 °C (105.2 °F) which was recorded in October. The lowest recorded temperature is −2.2 °C (28.0 °F) recorded in July.[8][9]

There are an average of 86 days of precipitation with the most occurring in December, and the least occurring in July.

Demographics

In 2020, the microregion of Uberaba consisted of 07 municipalities with a total population of 397,481 inhabitants within an area of 9,373 Km² (3,618 sq mi).

Economy

Uberaba is one of the largest grain producers in the state. In terms of revenue generated, the top agricultural products are corn, soybean, coffee, cotton, and sugarcane. The city hosts the ‘’Expozebu’’, known as one of the largest cattle fair in the world, it takes place in the fifth month of the year as other events and auctions take place in the following months.[10][11]  

The service sector employs just over half of Uberaba's population, followed by manufacturing industry, and agriculture. Industrial sector include agrobusiness, food processing, clothing, steel, mining, chemical products, electronic devices, home appliances, and more.[12][13]

Uberaba's phosphated fertilizer market represents high income to the sector. The industrial park currently hosts processing plants operated by chemical companies such as Vale S.A., FMC, Sipcam Nichino Brasil, Bunge, and Yara.[14]

Cargo is transported to other cities by road, and rail.[15]

Uberaba is served by Mário de Almeida Franco Airport.

Notable people

Uberaba is also famous for being the home of the philanthropist and spiritualist medium Chico Xavier. Chico was born in Pedro Leopoldo in 1910, living in Uberaba from 1959 until his death on 30 June 2002 at age 92. He is buried in the city.[16]
