Todaraisingh is a city and a municipality in Tonk district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Banas River flows adjacent to it. It is of immense importance to the Rajasthan's Art and Heritage.

Todaraisingh is often simply called Toda.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[1] Todaraisingh had a population of 23,559. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Todaraisingh has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 42%. In Todaraisingh, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tourism

In Todaraisingh, there are more than 50 historic temples, including the temple of Shree Adinath Bhagwan, which holds very old idol of Adinath bhagwan. Todaraisingh is historical place and has almost 300 years old Palace & other historic monuments. It is known for four things- Ghatti (used in flour mill), Patti (use in building, houses), Bawdi (small well) & Dawdi ("Beautiful girls"). In ancient times it was as good as other big regional powers. Todaraisingh city is a historical place - Shree kileshwar mahadev, Pipaji gupha, aam sagar, naharsingh mata, budh sagar etc. Surrounded by hills, the town of Toda Raisingh is situated in Tonk district. It is an ancient town of archaeological significance. Toda Rai Singh has a number of places of tourist interest. Among them are - Shree kileshwar mahadev, Naharsingh mata, Aam sagar, Budh sagar, Sant pipa ji ki gupha, Kushal Bag, Hadi Rani Ki Baori (kund), Raja Rai Singh's Mahal, Isar Baori, Bhopat Baori and temples of Kalyanji, Raghoraiji, Gopinathji, Govinddeoji, etc. Bijolia inscription of V.E. 1226 suggests that Toda Rai Singh was a popular centre of Jaini. Hathi- Bhata Hathi Bhata mean Stone elephant is an attraction for tourists in Tonk district. Situated at 30 km on Tonk- Sawai Madhopur Road from Tonk it is carved from a single stone and bigger than real elephant.

Ancient Names

In earlier times, it was also known as Takshak giri Takshakagadha or Takshakpur, Todapattan, Ishtikapur, etc.

History

It was established during the 4th century by the Nagas and was later ruled by the Yuhilas of Chatsu and the Chauhans of Ajmer. It served as the capital to Solanki Rajputs during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The town is named after Rai Singh Sisodia who was a famous ruler of this place. He happened to be a Mughal 'Mansoobdar' during the reign of Shah Jahan.

Solanki History

In year 593 AD (651 Vikram Samant) Rao Raja Rai Singh Solanki founded the Town of Toda Rai Singh (named after himself, Rai Singh - Toda means settlement). Todarai Singh is in Tonk District. Rao Raja Rai Singh had two sons, the elder one was a saint and lived for 120 years his name was Jai Dev Solanki later he was known as Jai Dada Dev and the younger son was brother Rao Raja Dharamdev Singh Solanki. Saint Jai Dev Solanki use to meditate on a Stone slab in the forest. Rao Raja Karam Chand Solanki with his entire tribe and other caste people left Todaraisingh and marched towards Delhi. The clan people reached Palam Village in Delhi in year 781 AD (838 Vikram Samant).

Monuments of Solanki rulers:

Many old forts were constructed by the Solanki Dynasties. Samadhi of Jai Dada Dev/Jai Dev Solanki and baoli in 2.5 acre land. The "Sheela" (stone slab) which Jai Dev Singh Solanki use to meditate on was taken to Palam Village by the descendants of Rao Raja Dharam Dev Singh Solanki brother of Jai Dev Singh Solanki.
