History

The school was formerly known as Swinton Community School and was renamed Swinton Academy on 1 October 2016 after joining with Aston Community Education Trust (ACET), a non-profit which has responsibility for all the academies in the region; ACET was founded by the Aston Academy, when it transitioned from a comprehensive school to an academy in 2011.[1]

Head teacher John Morrison introduced vertical tutoring and the house system to allow people in different year groups to talk to one another and create school wide challenges and events for all 4 houses.

In the 2021 film Everybody's Talking About Jamie, Swinton was used as the setting for a scene at the fictional Mayfield School.[2]

Ofsted inspections

In November 2011, in the last inspection by Ofsted of the pre-academy school, it was judged to be a "Good" school with a good sixth form.[3] In 2019, three years after the conversion to an Academy, Ofsted's first inspection of the academy found it to "Require Improvement".[4]

Since the commencement of Ofsted inspections in September 1993, Swinton has undergone five inspections:
