Subin Bhattarai

Subin Bhattarai (born 5 November 1982) is a Nepali writer and columnist. His second book and first novel, Summer Love, was a trendsetter and popular among youths. His first book was an anthology of short stories, Kathaki Paatra.

Early life and education

Subin Bhattarai was born in Khotang in eastern Nepal. A year after he was brought to Kathmandu. His father was a government official and mother, a housewife. He completed his master's degree in Environmental Science from Tribhuvan University in the year 2005. Since childhood Bhattarai has been influenced by B.P Koirala, Paarijat, Dhruba Chandra Gautam, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Anton Chekhov.

Writing career

Bhattarai started writing in school at the age of 10. He wrote poems, and recited several on Radio Nepal. He acted in several dramas as child artist and co-hosted the popular children's program Hatemalo on Radio Nepal.

His first book, Kathaki Paatra, an anthology of short stories, was published in 2011. The stories revolve around urban youths and love. Though commercially an average, Bhattarai was critically acclaimed in his first book. He was then inspired to write a youth centered novel.

Summer Love (2013) was a commercially successful novel.[1][2] The book is about college students at the Central Department of Environmental Science at Tribhuwan University falling in love. It was a best selling book in Nepal with in excess of 40,000 copies sold, and one of the best-selling books in the country for the year. Its success made Bhattarai popular among youths.

The popularity and craze of Summer Love demanded a sequel. After a year and a half, Saaya (2014) was released in August 2014. The book was launched by actresses Garima Panta and Keki Adhikari, with Bhattarai himself at Nepal Academy, Kamaladi, where there were thousands of fans. The book's plot is about how the misunderstanding in Summer Love cleared. It broke Bhattarai's own record in terms of selling. It was a best selling book in Nepal, was reprinted in the same month it was released, and was one of the best-selling books in the country for the year. Bhattarai became an overnight writing sensation among the youth.

Bhattarai's third novel, Monsoon, is a love story. It was released on September 24, 2016.

His latest work is a novel titled Priye Sufi (2018) in which he writes from the perspective of an older sister and how she overcomes her depression and her rare medical condition with love and care from her sister and father, but most importantly self-love.

He is currently writing the column Yuwa Man in one of the most selling weekly magazines, Kantipur Saptahik.

Summer Love was adapted into a movie by the popular filmmaker Bikash Acharya of the series Nai Na Bhannu La.
