The city was attacked by False Dmitry II soldiers on 6 February 1610. Tsar Vasili IV of Russia ordered his troops, commanded by Prince Mikhail Volkonsky, to guard the city.

On 4 July 1610 at the Battle of Klushino, the tsar's forces suffered a consequential defeat, and on 19 July the Seven Boyars overthrew the Vasili IV. Because the tsar's army was crushed by Polish army, reinforcements would not arrive to repel the invading Tushino forces, led by Dmitry II himself. After three weeks of attacks, the defender lack of supply, two defenders named Yakov Zmeev and Afanasy Chelishchev opened the gate on 10 August. Volkonsky and his soldiers retreated to Pafnutiev Monastery. They kept fighting with Polish mercenaries until their deaths.[1][2]

Though a loss for the Muscovite forces, the siege served a crucial role in allowing for greater strategic victories by Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski in the Battle of Kolomenskoye five days later.[3]
