Salim Abdool Karim

Salim Safurdeen Abdool Karim FRSSAf FRS[2] is a South African Public Health Medicine Specialist, epidemiologist and infectious diseases specialist and Vice President of the International Science Council.

Career

Karim is a professor at both the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and Columbia University in the United States. He was involved in the CAPRISA 004 study.[3]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Karim was chosen to lead a 45-person Ministerial Advisory Committee. The committee was intended to guide the South African government's response to the pandemic, and included several other medical experts.[4] He was elected to be the Vice President for Outreach and Engagement of the International Science Council from 2021 to 2024 at the ISC General Assembly on 14 October 2021.

Recognition

Karim is a recipient of the TWAS Prize (2008),[7] the most prestigious scientific award in Africa, the Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award,[2] as well as the Reebok Human Rights Award, the Olusegun Obasanjo Prize, and other honors. In 2020 he received jointly with his wife Quarraisha Abdool Karim the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award.[8]

On 20 January, 2022, he and his wife, Quarraisha Abdool Karim, were given the VinFuture Prize for their work on developing a tenofovir gel which can be used to prevent HIV infection in women.[9]

Personal life

Karim is a father and is married to Quarraisha Abdool Karim whom he has worked with in research.[10]
