Ramón Alonso R.
Ramón Alonso R., also Montclair, José Gallart or Balmes, was a steamship and ocean liner built in 1898 in the United Kingdom for mixed cargo of crew and goods.[1] During life until it was scrapped in 1959, it suffered several accidents. In 1913 that caught fire offshore 500 miles east of the Bermuda. The passage made up of 103 people, were rescued in another steamer that landed them in New York from where they could return to their destination in Spain. In the last and longest stage it was the most important merchant ship of the Spanish company Hijo de Ramón Alonso R. sailing as Ramón Alonso R. since 1927.

The Cunard Line steamship SS Pannonia with Captain Robert Capper rescued 103 men, women, and children from the burning steamship Balmes in mid-ocean. Balmes was operated by Captain Juan Ruiz.[2] The ship was towed to St. George's harbor in Bermuda by the tugs Gladisfen and Powerful, convoyed by Pannonia.[3]
