Ondo State

Ondo State is a state in southwestern Nigeria. It was Created in February 3, 1976 from the former Western State.[4]Ondo State borders Ekiti State (formally part of the state) to the north, Kogi State to the northeast, Edo State to the east, Delta State to the southeast, Ogun State to the southwest, Osun State to the northwest, and The Atlantic Ocean to the south.[5] The state's capital is Akure, the former capital of the ancient Akure Kingdom.[6] Edo state includes mangrove-swamp forest near the Bights of Benin.[7]

Nicknamed the "Sunshine State", Ondo State is the 19th most populated state in the country.[8] It is also the 25th largest state by landmass.[9] The state is predominantly Yoruba,[10][11] where the Yoruba language is commonly spoken.[12] The state economy is dominated by the petroleum industry, with cocoa production, asphalt mining, and activities utilizing the state's extensive coastline also serving as major economic factors.[13] It is the home to Ikogosi warm and cold spring.

Government and society

The state contains eighteen local government areas, the major ones being Akoko, Akure, Okitipupa, Ondo, Ilaje, Idanre and Owo. The majority of the state's citizens live in urban centers. The prominent government universities in Ondo state are the Federal University of Technology Akure, Akure, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Ondo and the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.[14]

Governor

Akeredolu Oluwarotimi Odunayo[16] is the current sitting governor of Ondo state.[17] Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was sworn-in on February 24, 2017 as the successor of Olusegun Mimiko.[18] The deputy governor of Ondo State is Lucky Aiyedatiwa[19]

Ethnic groups

The ethnic composition of Ondo State is largely from the Yoruba subgroups of the Idanre, Akoko, The Edo speaking, Akure, Ikale, Ilaje, Ondo, and Owo peoples. Ijaw people, such as the Apoi, Furupagha and Arogbo populations, inhabit the coastal areas, and a sizeable number of the Ondo State people who speak a variant of the Yoruba language similar to the Ife dialect reside in Oke-Igbo.[20] The vast majority of the population are Christians, while the minority practiced Islam and traditional worship.[21][22][23]
