The Lusail Stadium, owned by the Qatar Football Association,[4] is the biggest stadium in Qatar and one of eight stadiums being converted for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.[5]

The stadium is located about 23 km north of Doha.[4]

Construction

The procurement process for the stadium conversion began in 2014.[6] The stadium was built as a joint venture by HBK Contracting (HBK) and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).[7][8] MEP works has been carried out by HBK Engineering W L L.

The stadium was designed by British firm Foster + Partners, and Populous,[9] supported by MANICA Architecture.[4] The stadium has a capacity of 80,000 seats.[10][11] Like the other stadiums planned for the 2022 World Cup, the Lusail Stadium will be cooled using solar power and have a zero carbon footprint.[12]

Construction began on 11 April 2017.[13] The end of construction of the Stadium was originally scheduled for 2020. It was then to host three friendly matches until the 2022 World Cup,[10] but as the completion of the stadium was postponed, it will subsequently host 10 games including the final.[14]

Following the World Cup, it is expected to be reconfigured into a 40,000-seat stadium.[15] Excess seating will be removed, and other parts of the building repurposed as a community space with shops, cafés, athletic and education facilities, and a health clinic.[16]

2022 FIFA World Cup

Lusail Iconic Stadium will host ten matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including the final.
