Khorostkiv

Khorostkiv (Ukrainian: Хоростків, Polish: Chorostków) is a city in Chortkiv Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Khorostkiv urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine.[1] Population: 6,703 (2021 est.)[2]

History

In the Second Polish Republic, Khorostkiv, then known as Chorostków, belonged to the County of Kopczynce, Tarnopol Voivodeship. The town is the birthplace of Polish painter Jan Maszkowski (born 1793), and Jesuit theologist, translator and scholar Stanislaw Stys (born 1896).

City since 1977.[3]

In January 1989 the population was 8811 people.[4][5]

Until 18 July 2020, Khorostkiv belonged to Husiatyn Raion. The raion was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Ternopil Oblast to three. The area of Husiatyn Raion was merged into Chortkiv Raion.[6][7]
