History
KCMQ started its life as an MOR format, before flipping to Top 40/CHR during the second quarter of 1983, known as "Q97", marking it one out of the 2 dominant CHR stations in the mid-Missouri market at the period, with the other being KTXY. Throughout the 1980s and continued into the first 2 quarters of the 1990s, KCMQ and KTXY were both dominant CHR stations in the mid-Missouri market. But it wasn't until 1994 when KCMQ ended its 11-year CHR relationship and flipped to country. Right around that point, the station used to operate along with KTGR 1580 KHz branded as Kix 96.7, airing country music. With the slogan, “Your #1 Choice for Today’s Young Country”. In the late 1990s, the station aired an active rock format, which transitioned over time to classic rock.
