Jared Porter

Jared Porter (born November 23, 1979) is a former American baseball executive. He served as the general manager for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB) from December 2020 until January 2021, when he was fired for sending explicit texts and photos to a female journalist, including photos of an erect penis,[1] while a member of the Chicago Cubs front office in 2016.

Early life and Family

Porter was born in Wayzata, Minnesota, and lived there until he was 15 years old when his family moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts. He attended Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, and Bowdoin College. He played baseball and hockey for the Bowdoin Polar Bears, and graduated in 2003 with a degree in History.[2]

Porter is a cousin to Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.[3] Porter was married to Katie Burke, daughter of the Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations Brian Burke, but the couple divorced in 2014.[4]

Career

Porter interned for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2002 and 2003.[5] He joined the Boston Red Sox as an intern in 2004, becoming their Director of Professional Scouting in 2012. He spent two years with the Chicago Cubs also as Director of Professional Scouting, under former Red Sox executive Theo Epstein, where the pair helped assemble the 2016 World Series team before he was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2016-17 offseason as Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager.[6]

On December 13, 2020, the New York Mets hired Porter as their General Manager.[7] On January 18, 2021, it was revealed by ESPN that in 2016 while Porter was with the Cubs as Director of Professional Scouting, he had sent over 60 unsolicited text messages to a female journalist, including a photograph of an erect penis.[8] The Mets fired him the next day, just over a month into his tenure.[9] On June 30, 2021, Porter was banned through the 2022 season for the incident until 2023, where he can be reinstated.[10]
