HD 179886 (HR 7289) is a solitary[11] star located in the southern constellation Telescopium. It has an apparent magnitude of 5.37, making it faintly visible to the naked eye if viewed under ideal conditions. The star is situated at a distance of 700 light years but is recceding with a heliocentric radial velocity of 6.3 km/s.

HD 179886 has a stellar classification of K3 III, indicating that the object is an ageing K-type giant. It has an angular diameter of 1.95±0.03,[12] yielding a diameter 37 times that of the Sun[8] at its estimated distance. At present it has 111% the mass of the Sun[7] and radiates at 365 L[9] from its enlarged photosphere at an effective temperature of 4,622 K,[9] giving it an orange glow. HD 179886 has a metallicity 141% that of the Sun[7] and spins modestly with a projected rotational velocity of 2.4 km/s.[10]

HD 179886 has a companion separated 0.4 arcseconds away.[13] It's most likely a background star unrelated to the star.
