  • A gas explosion at a coal mine in Mexico killed over 100 miners.[1]
  • Four American police officers in four different states were shot and killed in the line of duty on the same day:
  • Police Officer Halladay B. Pratt of the Nebraska City, Nebraska Police Department was struck on the head with a brick while trying to make an arrest. He would die of his injuries on February 10.[7]
  • Born: Langston Hughes, African-American writer, in Joplin, Missouri (d. 1967)
  • Died: Salomon Jadassohn, 70, German composer and pianist (b. 1831)

  • The French ship Chanaral wrecked on the coast of Brittany, France, killing 21 people.[1]

  • The French Chamber of Deputies approved a resolution to reduce the workload for coal miners to nine hours per day, approving it 338 to 219.[1] Under the legislation, the workday would be 8 1/2 hours by 1904 and eight hours in 1906.[1]
  • Sheriff John Hall Powers of the Johnson County, Arkansas Sheriff's Office was in his apartment when he heard the sound of two explosions from a nearby bank, where robbers were attempting to blow open the safe with nitroglycerin. Running toward the bank, Powers was killed in a shootout with the robbers' lookout.[11]
  • Born: Kaoru Iwamoto, Japanese professional Go player, in Masuda, Shimane, Japan (d. 1999)

  • American Protestant missionary Ellen M. Stone and her fellow missionary, Katerina Stefanova Tsilka, were released by Bulgarian rebels in the Ottoman Empire, more than five months after they had been kidnapped on September 3, 1901.[27] Miss Tsilka, who was pregnant at the time the two women were taken captive near Bansko, Bulgaria, gave birth to a daughter while being held for ransom. The three arrived in Strumica at 3 a.m.; Miss Stone then proceeded to Salonika.
  • Prince Henry of Prussia arrived in New York Harbor aboard the ship Kronprinz Wilhelm.[28]
  • Constable James Henan DeLaney of the Vina, California Township Constable's Office was shot and mortally wounded by an intoxicated man he was questioning after someone threw firecrackers into a door during a dance at Vina Town Hall. DeLaney would die of his wounds the following day.[29]
