Background

Adele filed for divorce from her husband Simon Konecki in September 2019.[1] Single again for the first time in almost 10 years, she sought a serious relationship in Los Angeles but struggled to find one. Adele said, "I lasted five seconds [dating there ...], everyone is someone or everyone wants to be someone."[2] She wrote "Can I Get It" about wanting to be in a real relationship instead of "one that would devolve into casual sex".[2] Swedish record producers Max Martin and Shellback, who Adele had earlier worked with on "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" (2015), produced and co-wrote the song.[3] Its title was unveiled as the sixth track on her fourth studio album, 30, on 1 November 2021.[4][5] "Can I Get It" was promoted to US contemporary hit radio stations on 24 November 2021 as a promotional single.[6]

Critical reception

"Can I Get It" is an acoustic guitar jam, with an upbeat whistled chorus. Lyrically, the song is about the feeling of love, and wanting a true, long-lasting relationship.[7] According to AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung, its "stomping" sees Adele "wad[e] deeper into the dating pool" as she seeks a "real love connection".[8] El Hunt of NME found "'Can I Get It' initially intriguing", comparing its "raucous acoustic strums" and bright energy to English singer Sam Fender, and writing that it lyrically veers from the "safer territory" of other album tracks.[9] Writing for The Line of Best Fit, David Cobbald dismissed the song as "questionable".[10] Pitchfork's Jillian Mapes ruled it out as non-essential, pop radio filler.[11]
