Elections to the council are held in three out of every four years, with one third of the 42 seats on the council being elected at each election. Both the Conservative and Labour parties have controlled the council at different times, as well as periods when no party has had a majority.
At an extraordinary meeting on 25 May 2017, the council resolved to change from operating a Leader and Cabinet form of governance to a Committee System form of governance.[4] Despite this change, the council still uses the title of leader for the councillor who chairs the main policy committee.[3]
The council is currently composed of the following councillors as of September 2021:[5][6]
Party | Councillors | |
Conservative Party | 25 | |
Labour Party | 10 | |
Independent Group | 4 | |
Wickford Independents[7] | 2 | |
