Ayamelum
Ayamelum is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, south-East of Nigeria with headquarter at Anaku. Towns that make up the local government are Omor, Umueje, Omasi, Igbakwu, Umumbo, Anaku, Umuerum, Ifite Ogwari. Ayamelum local government area is situated at the border between Enugu State and Anambra State.[1] The communities in the local government area are notable for enabling the environment for food production. The LGA has economic and agricultural potentials that can generate funds and create employment for the youth.[2] Omor in Ayamelum is noted for its rice production. Thus, the community benefits from the Lower Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority which enhances its agricultural activities.[3]

However, Ayamelum has no access road. The only entrance to the LGA which is Otuocha-Omor-Adani federal road has broken down into a terrible state. This prevents them from taking their food production to towns and cities.[3]

Communal Clashes in Ayamelum LGA
There are age-long land disputes in Ayamelum. These include Omor-Anaku communities which made some residents of the communities flee from their homes. Buildings were burnt, property and vehicles were destroyed and many people were inflicted with machete cuts.[4] The crisis in the two communities is known to be ownership of border farmland.[5][6]The boundary disputes have been going on for 100 years.[7] Many people have been killed in these clashes over the years.[8] The government has set up Ayamelum Boundary Adjustment and Peace Committee to restore peace and co-existence in the disputing communities.[9][10]
In another clash, Omor and Umumbo communities both in Ayamelum engulfed in conflict over land disputes. Here, about 50 people were missing while about 300 persons were injured.[11]
Nnamdi Azikiwe University Campus in Ayamelum
It is noteworthy to mention that The Faculty of Agriculture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University is domiciled at Ifite-Ogwari premises which is one of the communities in Ayamelum local government area.[12] Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka acquired the land that is about 120 Hectares at Ifite Ogwuari in Ayamelum LGA for the Faculty of Agriculture.[13]
