Ang Yong Guan

Ang Yong Guan (Chinese: 洪永元; pinyin: Hóng Yǒngyuán; born 24 January 1955) is a Singaporean politician, psychiatrist, retired army colonel and a member of the opposition Progress Singapore Party (PSP). He currently has a clinic called Ang Yong Guan Psychiatry in Paragon Shopping Centre. [1]

Early life

Ang graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1979 and had his postgraduate training in psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh between 1984 and 1986.[1]

Political career

Ang joined the Singapore Democratic Party as a candidate and contested for Holland–Bukit Timah GRC at the 2011 general election where his team obtained 39.92% of valid votes. Ang left the Singapore Democratic Party after he was defeated by the People's Action Party in the 2011 general election.

In 2014, he joined a new party called SingFirst set up by Tan Jee Say and contested in the Tanjong Pagar GRC in 2015 and obtained only 22.29% of valid votes. He became the chairman of the party. [2][3]

At the 2020 general election, Tan Jee Say dissolved SingFirst and Ang left the party and joined as a candidate of the Progress Singapore Party set up by Tan Cheng Bock and stood in the newly created single-member constituency of Marymount and obtained 44.96% of valid votes.

Due to Progress Singapore Party CEC election, he was a member of the CEC. He is the head of training and development for the Progress Singapore Party. [4]

Military career

Ang has served with the SAF for 23 years from 1980 to 2003, and was the head of the Psychological Medicine Branch as the Chief Psychiatrist before he retired from the Singapore Armed Forces as the rank of a Colonel.

Personal life

Ang is married to an educator and together they have four children. He runs a private clinic at the Paragon Shopping Mall.[5]

Awards

In 1995, Ang was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) for his grassroots contributions as a community leader at Kembangan Constituency, helping then-Member of Parliament George Yeo for more than 15 years. He was also awarded the Public Administration Medal in 1996 for his military services.[1]
