Adrian Tan

Adrian Tan Gim Hai (born 1966) is a lawyer and author from Singapore. He is a partner at TSMP Law Corporation and current president of the Law Society of Singapore (Law Society).[1]

Tan holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) awarded by the National University of Singapore (NUS) as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Psychology awarded by The Open University.[2]

Tan is a litigator specialising in intellectual property, information technology, real estate, and shareholder oppression disputes.[3] He joined TSMP Law Corporation in 2018 having previously practiced at Stamford Law (now known as Morgan Lewis Stamford LLC) and Drew & Napier.[4] Tan is also the Honorary Legal Counsel of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.[5]

Boards and memberships

Tan served as a member of the Law Society Council from 2013 to 2020;[12] during this period, he served as Treasurer of the Law Society in 2016[13] and as Vice President of the Law Society from 2017 to 2020.[14][15][16][17] In 2021, he ran as a candidate in the Law Society's annual election and was elected as a member of the 2022 Council of the Law Society.[12] He was thereafter elected as President of the Law Society for 2022.[18]

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Law Society Pro Bono Services,[19] Maxwell Chambers,[20] and Arts House Limited.[21]

Tan previously served as a member of the Speak Good English Movement Committee.[22]

The Teenage Textbook

Tan is the author of bestselling fiction novels The Teenage Textbook (1988) and The Teenage Workbook (1989), which he wrote while he was an undergraduate student at NUS.[23] The two books sold over 50,000 copies. In 2015, The Teenage Textbook was selected by The Business Times as one of the Top 10 English Singapore books from 1965–2015, alongside titles by Arthur Yap and Daren Shiau.[24]

In 1997, The Teenage Textbook was made into a stage play by The Necessary Stage, starring Hossan Leong and Mark Richmond.[25] In 1998, it was also made into a film, The Teenage Textbook Movie, starring Melody Chen and Caleb Goh, which topped the box office in Singapore for four weeks.[26] In 2017, local theatre group Go! Theatre performed a musical theatre adaptation titled The Teenage Textbook Musical.[27] In 2021, the book was reimagined by Drew Pan as a TV series titled Teenage Textbook – The Series, on Channel 5, starring Ong Yi Xuan, Chen Yixin, and Chris Mak.[28]

In the media

While at university, Tan represented NUS as a debater in international competitions and televised debates in Singapore.[29] He has appeared as a guest judge on the International Emmy Award-nominated[30] debate TV show The Arena on Mediacorp Channel 5, and as a regular judge on the debate show Bridging Asia on Channel NewsAsia.[31]

Tan acted as a consultant on Singaporean drama series The Pupil starring Rebecca Lim and Adrian Pang.[32] Lee Thean-jeen (co-creator and executive producer of The Pupil) has said that the idea for his feature film Homecoming (笑着回家) originated with Tan and Phillip Lim (director of The Teenage Textbook Movie).[33]

In 2003, Tan made a guest appearance on Singaporean sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd.[34]
