On June 10, 2021, USA Rugby was formally accepted as a bid candidate for the 2027 and 2031 editions of the Rugby World Cup, as well as the 2029 Women's Rugby World Cup.[1] A formal bid was announced on October 20, with interest shown by various cities with large American football stadiums.[2]
As of 2022, the United States is on course to formally be awarded the right to host the 2031 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2033 Women's Rugby World Cup in May of 2022. [3] World Rugby is in an exclusive dialogue with the US to bring the Rugby World Cup to the US in 2031.[4] In April of 2022 President Joe Biden sent a letter of support to World Rugby affirming his support for the bid. Potential host cities
A total of 24 cities throughout the United States have expressed interest in hosting matches. Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Birmingham, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. have all expressed interest.
