2022 FA Cup Final

The 2022 FA Cup Final is an association football match scheduled to be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England, on 14 May 2022.[2] Chelsea and Liverpool will meet, just as in the 2022 EFL Cup Final. This will be the second time that the same pair of teams meet in both the EFL Cup Final and the FA Cup Final of the same season, after Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday in 1993.[3] Organised by the Football Association (FA), it is the 141st final of the Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) and the showpiece match of English football's primary cup competition.

As a Premier League team, Chelsea entered the competition in the Third Round Proper where they played at home at Stamford Bridge against National League club Chesterfield. Timo Werner opened the scoring in the 6th minute before Callum Hudson-Odoi made it 2-0 to Chelsea in the 18th minute, before Romelu Lukaku added a third for Chelsea in the 20th minute and Andreas Christensen made it 4-0 to Chelsea just before half-time. Hakim Ziyech then closed the scoring for Chelsea in the 55th minute after they were awarded a penalty. Akwasi Asante did pull a goal back for Chesterfield in the 80th minute.[4] In the Fourth Round Proper, they played EFL League One club Plymouth Argyle at home. Macaulay Gillesphey opened the scoring for Plymouth in the 8th minute, César Azpilicueta then equalised for Chelsea in the 41st minute and Marcos Alonso scored the winner for Chelsea in stoppage time at the end of the first half in extra time to seal a 2-1 win for Chelsea.[5]

Their opposition in the Fifth Round Proper was EFL Championship club Luton Town who they played away at Kenilworth Road. Reece Burke opened the scoring for Luton in the 2nd minute, Saúl Ñíguez then equalised for Chelsea in the 27th minute. Harry Cornick then put Luton in front again in the 40th minute, however, Werner equalised again for Chelsea in the 68th minute and Lukaku sealed a 3-2 win for Chelsea in the 78th minute.[6] In the Quarter-Finals, they played another Championship club Middlesbrough away at the Riverside Stadium. Lukaku opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 15th minute and Ziyech sealed a 2-0 win for Chelsea in the 31st minute.[7] Chelsea then faced fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium in the Semi-Finals which was being used as a neutral venue. Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 65th minute and Mason Mount sealed a 2-0 win to qualify Chelsea for the FA Cup Final.[8]

As a Premier League team, Liverpool entered the competition in the Third Round Proper where they played at home at Anfield against EFL League One club Shrewsbury Town. Kaide Gordon opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 34th minute, then Daniel Udoh equalised for Shrewsbury in the 27th minute, Fabinho then put Liverpool ahead in the 44th minute, Roberto Firmino then added a third in the 78th minute and Fabinho the closed the scoring for Liverpool from a penalty in second half stoppage time.[9] In the Fourth Round Proper, they played EFL Championship club Cardiff City at home. Diogo Jota opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 53rd minute, then Takumi Minamino added a second for Liverpool in the 68th minute, Harvey Elliott added a third for Liverpool in the 76th minute. Rubin Colwill pulled a goal back for Cardiff in the 80th minute.[10]

Their opposition in the Fifth Round Proper was a fellow Premier League club Norwich City who they played away at home. Minamino opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 27th minute and added another in the 39th minute. Lukas Rupp pulled a goal back for Norwich City in the 76th minute, however, Liverpool won 2-1.[11] In the Quarter-Finals, they played another Championship club Nottingham Forest away at the City Ground. Jota opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 78th minute with the only goal of the match.[12] Liverpool faced Premier League leaders Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in the Semi-Finals which was being used as a neutral venue. Ibrahima Konaté opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 9th minute, Sadio Mané then added a second for Liverpool in the 17th minute and Mané scored another for Liverpool in the 40th minute. Jack Grealish then pulled one back for City in the 47th minute and Bernardo Silva scored a second for City in second half stoppage time. However, Liverpool held on to win 3-2 to qualify for the FA Cup Final.[13]

Pre-match

Background

This will be the sides' second meeting in an FA Cup final, having met in 2012, when Chelsea won 2–1.[14] They also met in four other title-deciding matches; the 2005 and 2022 League Cup finals, the 2006 FA Community Shield, and the 2019 UEFA Super Cup; Chelsea won the 2005 meeting and Liverpool won the other three.[15][16][17][18]

This will Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel's second successive FA Cup Final after they lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the previous years final.[19] On the other hand, this will be Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp's first FA Cup Final since becoming Liverpool manager.

Liverpool are looking at winning an historic quadruple of the 2021-22 EFL Cup, the 2021-22 Premier League, the 2021-22 FA Cup and the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League.[20]

The referee for the final will be Craig Pawson from Sheffield & Hallamshire with Dan Cook and Edward Smart as the Assistant referees and David Coote will be Fourth official. The Video Assistant Referee will be Paul Tierney and the Assistant Video Assistant Referee will be Simon Bennett. This will be Pawson's first FA Cup Final.

In the league meeting between the two sides they drew 1-1 at Anfield on 28 August 2021 with Kai Havertz opening the scoring for Chelsea in the 22nd minute and Mohamed Salah equalised for Liverpool in first half stoppage time after Liverpool were awarded a penalty kick with Reece James being sent-off.[21] In the reverse fixture the two sides drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge on 2 January 2022 with Sadio Mané opening the scoring for Liverpool in the 9th minute, then Salah increased Liverpool's advantage in the 26th minute, however, in the 42nd minute Mateo Kovačić pulled a goal back for Chelsea and Christian Pulisic scored the equaliser for Chelsea in first half stoppage time.[22]

  • Maximum of five substitutions, with a sixth allowed in extra time[note 1]

Post-match

The winners will qualify for the group stage of the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League.[24] They will also face the 2021–22 Premier League champions in the 2022 FA Community Shield, unless the team is also champions, in which the losing team will face the Premier League champions. Should either winning team place in the top five of the 2021–22 Premier League, the UEFA Europa League position will go to the sixth place Premier League team.[24]
