Zoe Daniel

Zoe Daniel is an Australian journalist, columnist and broadcaster. She is an independent candidate for the Division of Goldstein in the 2022 Australian federal election.

Early life

Daniel was born in Melbourne. Her father is the former Essendon footballer, Peter Daniel.[2] She moved to Launceston when she was two years old,[3] when her father got a job as a coach there.

At the age of six, Daniel was ascribed a reading age of 15.[4]

She originally wanted to become a vet, but Daniel's science teacher persuaded her to do something that better suited her, and she studied journalism.[5]

Journalism career

Daniel began her career with the ABC in 1993 as a regional radio producer in Adelaide. She worked in the rural department for a number of years before becoming the presenter of The Country Hour in Victoria.[5]

In 2004, Daniel reported on the summer Olympics.[6]

She was posted in Africa from 2005-2007 where she reported on many of the conflicts in the region, including on the regime of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone civil war, the Darfur genocide and South Sudan.[7]

When she became pregnant, Daniel returned to Australia, but when her children were one and three years old in 2009, she moved with her family to Phnom Penh where she reported on the Khmer Rouge tribunal.[8]

From 2010 until 2013 Daniel took up a posting in Bangkok as the ABC's southeast Asian correspondent.[9] At the time, Daniel's posting while a mother of young children was unprecedented.[10] During her time there she reported on the 2010 Thai political protests and interviewed Aung San Suu Kyi.[5]

In 2015 Daniel was posted to be the chief of the ABC Washington bureau. In that time she travelled to 44 of the 50 states and was one of the journalists who foresaw the possibility of a Trump victory.[11] She ended her posting there in 2019.

After 27 years with ABC news, Daniel decided to finish her career with the organisation, leaving in July 2020.[12]

The New Daily

In late 2021, Daniel began writing a regular opinion column for The New Daily. In her column she has written about the failures of the Morrison Government in areas such as the environment,[13] COVID-19 vaccine procurement,[14] and integrity in politics.[15]

Daniel was endorsed by Voices of Goldstein as an independent candidate to run in the 2022 federal election in the seat of Goldstein.[16] Her candidacy was endorsed by former member for Indi, Cathy McGowan, former leader of the Liberal party, John Hewson and minister in the Fraser government, Ian Macphee.[17][18]

Daniel is a self-described swinging voter, as a consequence of her father's "negative experience of party politics".[19] She cast her vote for the Liberals at the 2016 Australian federal election on the basis of what she perceived to be Malcolm Turnbull’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis.[20] The focus of her campaign is action on climate change and greater integrity in politics, areas in which she feels the Liberal party has failed.[21]

Daniel is part of a network of female community independents campaigning in safe Liberal seats.[22]

Personal life

Daniel is married to husband, Rowan and has two children.[9] She lives in Hampton.[16]
