Inspiration and Sketch
The character sketch of Ajay Devgn is inspired from Karna (the central protagonist of Mahabharata). Siddique told in an interview, "In Hinduism texts and ancient scriptures, the character of Karna symbolizes of an extremely charming hero, an ideal human being who possesses all the qualities and who was always victorious throughout his life from his entry in Rangbhoomi to conquering the entire world. Since birth, he was shown as a divine child and who was "born to win the world" which is actually the central theme of the film. Whereas, the character of Rama (the protagonist of Ramayana) is mostly similar to Karna in the Mahabharata. But Karna is a liberal and an extrovert and on the other hand Rama is a milder conservative and an introvert."
Dhirajlal said, "Karna has been an inspiration for millions since thousands of years, his innumerous victories and achievements from being raised in a poor charioteer family to becoming the hero of the Mahabharata was taken as the main theme of the film and Devgn's character sketch. This idea was liked by Farouq Siddique and decided to make a film on a hero who was always victorious throughout his life."
Initially film titles were thought to be kept as 'Jaya' which was also the victory name given for Karna in Mahabharata. Then the titles were thought of Mrityunjaya, Digvijaya or Hridajaya indicating different victory names of Karna. However the film was changed to Vijaypath- the path to victory.
"In our childhood, we all have read the about the valour and heroism of Karna and lord Rama in our story books or from our grandparents. We all have visualized them on television through BR Chopra's Mahabharat and Sagar Arts' Ramayan. I still remember in those days when streets got emptied at 9 a.m just to see Pankaj Dheer aka Karna on television." |
– Faruque Sidddique[4] |
He said further, "In the Ramayana, Rama is a conservative man who adopts the traditional values and doesn't wish for any change. Whereas in the Mahabharata when the times have changed, we see Karna brought reforms to the Indian society and thereby bringing the first revolution for the end of dynastic successions which leads to the end of Chandravanshi dynasty followed by an upsurge of new kingdoms and empires such as Nandas, Maurya Empire and Gupta Empire. The character of Ajay (Devgn) is inspired from both lord Rama(conservative) and Karna(liberal)"
