Veselý

Veselý (feminine Veselá) is a Czech, Slovak, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish and English surname. According to the Dictionary of American Family Names (1956), it may derive from Vasily, which is a pet form of Basil (meaning "kingly"); or one who came from Vezelay, France; or "a joyous or happy fellow"[1] (from Czech and eastern Slavic veselý, meaning "merry" or "cheerful"). It is also reported to be a Jewish name from central and eastern Europe.[2]

The name Vesely was carried to England by the Normans after the Norman Conquest in 1066, with the family who settled in Northampton. The name origin of this family was its French place of residence in Vassy, in the Normandy region. Other records suggest that the name was formerly de Vesci, a baronial name.[3]
