Biography

Umm Ishaq was the daughter of Talha ibn Ubayd Allah. Talha died in the Battle of the Camel in 656 fighting against the army of Caliph Ali (r. 656–661).[1] She was among the most beautiful women of the Quraysh, as well as among the most bad-tempered ones.[2]

Umm Ishaq's brother Ishaq promised Mu'awiya (r. 661–680) to marry off Umm Ishaq to Mu'awiya's son and successor Yazid I (r. 680–683). He ultimately wed her to Hasan, Ali's son and successor in Kufa who had been deposed by Mu'awiya. The affair led to Yazid's hostility toward the family of Talha during his reign.[3] After Hasan was killed, she married Husayn ibn Ali.[2] After Husayn was killed, she married Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr. It is said that before this marriage to Abd Allah, she had married Tamam ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib.[4]

Children

Umm Ishaq had three children from Hasan ibn Ali: Husayn (who was known as al-Athram), Talha ibn Hasan, and Fatima bint Hasan.[5]

She also had one daughter from Husayn: Fatima al-Kubra.[6]
