Background and promotion
Puth had previewed it on the video-sharing app TikTok for several months leading up to its release. On March 23, 2022, he announced that he would release the song in April of the same year.[2] He explained that it was a hard time in his life and he wanted to have a fresh start in life, describing the song as the "hardest song that I ever had to put together, and I'm so excited for you [his fans] to hear it".[3] Puth announced the release date of the song and its cover art on April 3, 2022.[4]
Composition and lyrics
"That's Hilarious" is set in the key of E♭ minor with a tempo of 108 beats per minute.[5] On the song, Puth calls back to a breakup in 2019, in which he sings on the pre-chorus: "You took away a year of my f**king life, and I can't get it back no more / So when I see those tears comin' out your eyes, I hope it's me they're for".[6] The chorus includes a synthesized laugh that is sung in the background as he shows sarcasm as he sings: "You didn't love when you had me / But now you need me so badly / You can't be serious (Ha-ha-ha) / That's hilarious (Ha-ha-ha)".[7]
