Teushpa
Teushpa (Akkadian: 𒋼𒍑𒉺 Teušpa, and 𒋼𒍑𒉺𒀀 Teušpā;[1] from Scythian *Tavispaya[2]) was an early 7th-century BC king of the Cimmerians
Name
Teušpa and Teušpā are Akkadian forms of the name *Tavispaya, meaning "swelling with strength", which originates from a Cimmerian dialect of the Old Iranian Scythian language.[2] Despite the similarity of Teushpa's name with that of his Persian contemporary Teispes (Cišpiš), they do not seem to be etymologically related.[3]
Reign
Teushpa is mentioned in the Neo-Assyrian king Esarhaddon's inscriptions as the king of the Cimmerians and of the Umman-Manda. In 679 BC, he commanded the Cimmerians in battle against the Assyrians under Esarhaddon, but lost the battle.[4]
