Ted Stamm

Ted Stamm (1944–1984) was an American painter.[2][3]

Early life and career

Ted Stamm was born in Brooklyn in 1944. He grew up in Freeport, New York. He graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelors of Fine Art (BFA) in 1967, and moved to Soho. His studio located on Wooster Street in Soho inspired his “Wooster” series of works.[4] Stamm received awards in Painting from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Fellowship in Fine Arts (1983) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Fellowship in Painting (1981–1982).[5] During his life he participated in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and around the world.[6]

Work

Stamm used aleatoric techniques, by tossing a die, to determine the number of layers of black paint that a painting was to receive.[7]

In 1974, Stamm started working with shaped stretchers, introduced the element of line into his paintings and created a new iconic series of work that he continued to develop throughout his life.[8]

Exhibitions

Stamm had his first solo exhibition at Artists Space, New York in 1975 at the age of 31.[9] Later that year he had his first exhibition in Europe at Galerie December in Düsseldorf, Germany.[10][11]

In 1977, Stamm was included by curator Manfred Schneckenburger in Documenta 6 in Kassel, Germany and by curator René Block in the exhibition New York – Downtown Manhattan – SoHo held at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.[12] Also in 1977, Stamm was included in A Painting Show at MoMA PS1 in New York.[13] In 1978, he exhibited at Hall Bromm's gallery.[14] Stamm exhibited at 112 Greene Street (1975), Artists Space (1975,[15] 1980) and Franklin Furnace (1977, 1980).
