Sumner family

The Sumner family is a prominent Massachusetts political family that traces its ancestry back to William Sumner, born in Bicester, England who emigrated to become an early settler of Dorchester, Massachusetts, now part of Boston.[1] Among his many descendants are:

Increase Sumner, early governor of Massachusetts
William H. Sumner, son of Increase and early Massachusetts historian
Charles Sumner, distant cousin of Increase and William, and abolitionist U.S. Senator during the U.S. Civil War
Edwin Vose Sumner, Union general during the U.S. Civil War, second cousin of Charles Sumner.[2]
Edwin Vose Sumner Jr., son of Edwin Vose Sumner and Union general during the U.S. Civil War
Samuel S. Sumner, son of Edwin Vose Sumner Sr. and U.S. Army general during the later 19th century.
