Early life

Sree Leela was born on 14 June 2001[1][2] into a Telugu family[3][4] in the United States, and was brought up in Bangalore, Karnataka.[5][6] Her mother Swarnalatha is a gynaecologist based in Bangalore.[7] Swarnalatha was married to industrialist Surapaneni Subhakara Rao, and Leela was born to Swarnalatha after their separation.[6][8]

Leela began her training in Bharatanatyam dance since she was a child. She aspires to become a doctor,[2] and is in the final year of MBBS as of 2021.[9]

In February 2022, Leela adopted two disabled children.[10]

Career

Director A. P. Arjun who came across Leela's pictures taken by cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda on social media, cast her in his directorial film Kiss (2019). Leela said that she chose to start her career in Kannada films as she grew up in Bangalore, despite having contacts in Telugu film industry.[11]

She began shooting for her debut film Kiss in 2017 while she was in the first year of her pre-university course.[2] Kiss was released in 2019 and was successful at the box office.[12] A. Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express stated that Leela made a confident debut, writing "Sreeleela looks stylish and garners equal attention."[13] Times of India critic Vinay Lokesh also echoed the same by stating that she shined in her role.[14] A month later, her second film Bharaate, opposite Sriimurali was released.[15] Reviewing the performance in the film for The News Minute, Aravind Shwetha wrote: "Leela is good and holds her own along with Sri Murali when it comes to acting and screen presence."[16] Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express wrote that, "This is Sreeleela’s second film, and she seems to be getting comfortable with being in front of the camera, and delivers what the role demands."[17]

In 2021, Leela was cast in romantic musical film Pelli SandaD, marking her debut in Telugu cinema.[18] Leela described her character in the film as a "role to die for".[19] While the film received negative reviews, Leela's role received appreciation from the critics.[20] Sangeetha Devi of The Hindu called the film "costly showreel" of the lead pair Roshan and Sree Leela, opining that they looked fresh and effervescent but lacked chemistry.[21]

In 2022, she starred in the Kannada romantic comedy By Two Love. Appreciating her performance, Sunayana Suresh of The Times of India stated: "Sreeleela steals the show with a role that offers her to be more than just eye candy in a film. She shines especially in the emotional scenes."[22] Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express felt it was "a delight to watch" her in the film.[23] A review from Deccan Herald opined while she was impressive, her Kannada pronunciation had room from improvement.[24]

Following the success of Pelli SandaD, Leela received multiple offers in Telugu films.[20][4] Leela has signed four films which are in various stages of production. She started filming for the Ravi Teja-starrer Dhamaka.[25][26] She is cast in Anagagana O Raju opposite Naveen Polishetty.[27] Leela is also stars in the untitled Telugu-Kannada bilingual production by Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram, opposite G. Janardhana Reddy's son Kireeti,[28] and in the Vakkantham Vamsi directorial alongside Nithiin.[29]
