Background

In the late 19tth century, Canadian brothers James W. Reid and Merritt J. Reid, immigrated to Evansville, Indiana and worked at the architectural firm of Boy and Brickley.[1] In 1879, they purchased the contracts from Boy & Brickley, and opened Reid Brothers.[1] Their most notable work in Evansville is the Willard Library (1886).[1]

Around 1888, they moved to the West Coast and became the most prominent architects in San Francisco, California under the name Reid & Reid. Their younger brother, Watson Elkinah Reid worked with them for a short time.
