Background and reception

Smithsonian Folkways provides a description: "The first recordings from an artist with a gift for interpreting original blues from Robert Johnson to Memphis Minnie to the Carter Family. Williams’s unmistakable sound is powerfully direct and filled with melancholy and passion."[1] A review in Montana State University Exponent calls it "The quintessential recording of Lucinda Williams ... An unbelievably soulful ... vocalist."[1]

Trouser Press called it "a warm, lively album of covers" that "shows off Williams’ affecting vocals and her roots — from the bayou to the church choir to the Opry".[4]
