Dr. Rajkumar filmography
Rajkumar was an Indian actor and singer in Kannada cinema. He debuted as a child actor in the 1942 Kannada film Bhakta Prahlada.[1] His first role as an adult came in Sri Srinivasa Kalyana (1952) and as a lead, two years later, in Bedara Kannappa. Since then, he went on to act in more than 200 Kannada films.[2][3][4][5] His films have enjoyed a success rate in excess of 90%.[6][7]
Rajkumar was given the epithet "Nata Sarvabhouma" meaning 'Emperor of acting' by Gubbi Veeranna which appears in Nata Sarvabhouma, a 1968 documentary made to commemorate the former's 100 film appearances.[8] Rajkumar was known for the portrayal of mythological and historical figures as well as devotional roles. His James Bond-themed spy thrillers also became popular.[9] His films were praised for acting as a bridge between the mainstream popular and the artistic cinema because of the theme of the story and their treatment.[10] An accomplished singer, Rajkumar often sang for his own films in the latter part of his career.[11] He had a minimum of ten releases in each of the years from 1963 to 1971. He held the record for highest releases as a lead in a single year (16 in 1968) in Kannada movies for 24 years until it was broken by Malashri.[12] His 1986 film Anuraga Aralithu was the first Indian film to be remade in seven other languages.[13]
