Perpendicular distance

In geometry, the perpendicular distance between two objects is the distance from one to the other, measured along a line that is perpendicular to one or both.

Particular instances include:

Curve fitting and line fitting methods may use perpendicular distance to measure the quality of a fit, as in Deming regression and total least squares.

A normal distance between a point and a curve or a surface may also be defined.
