OpenRails

OpenRails is an open source train simulator that is reverse compatible with Microsoft Train Simulator content and dlc.[1] Open Rails claims to have the largest collection of DLC for any train simulator thanks to the dedicated following of MSTS.[1] Open Rails uses the GPL license.[1] Open Rails is now moving on from achieving legacy support for MSTS to adding new features.[1]

Features

OpenRails allows a user to operate a train realistically on a route using either an MSTS compatible activity or a new timetable mode.[1] OpenRails takes advantage of modern graphics processors that allow it to achieve better frame rates than MSTS.[1] A keyboard or Raildriver can be used to allow a player to take control of railroad equipment in the game.[2] OpenRails has added 3d cabview functionality in addition to MSTS's classic 2d cabviews which are both supported.[1]

Downloadable Content

OpenRails has replaced the MSTS Route Editor and development tools, and new DLC continues to be developed and released.[3] Thousands of files to add routes, trains, and activities are available from websites catering to the train simulation community such as trainsim.com and elvastower.com.[4]

Free Starter Content

  • TrainSimulations offers the BNSF Scenic Subdivision from Wenatchee, Washington's Appleyard to Mukilteo, Washington through the Cascade Mountains and featuring the Cascade Tunnel as a free starter route for OpenRails.[5]
  • The Zig Zag Railway in Australia is offered as a free starter route by Coals to Newcastle.[6]
  • Maple Leaf Tracks offers the Oshawa Route in Toronto, Canada for OpenRails for free.[7]
