Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011

The Netherlands participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Selecting their song through the national final Nationaal Songfestival 2011, organised by Dutch broadcaster TROS. In July 2010 TROS announced that they had internally selected the male trio 3JS to represent Netherlands in at the Contest in Germany.

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 14 July 2010, radio DJ Giel Beelen claimed that TROS had selected the band 3JS to represent the Netherlands at the 2011 contest. 3JS was confirmed as the Dutch entrant on 15 July 2010 during the Radio 2 programme Gouden Uren, hosted by Daniël Dekker. It was also announced during the programme that their Eurovision entry would be selected through a live televised national final.[1][2]

Nationaal Songfestival 2011

Nationaal Songfestival 2011 was the national final that selected 3JS' Eurovision entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. The five competing songs, all written by the band, were announced on 16 December 2010.[3] The final took place on 30 January 2011 at the Studio 21 in Hilversum, hosted by Yolanthe Sneijder-Cabau and was broadcast on TROS as well as streamed online via the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.[4][5] Five songs, all performed by 3JS, competed and the winning song, "Je vecht nooit alleen", was selected by the votes of public televoting (50%) and a five-member jury panel (50%).[6][7] The five-member jury panel consisted of René Froger (2009 Dutch Eurovision entrant as part of De Toppers), Eric van Tijn (producer), Daniël Dekker (radio DJ), Annemieke Schollaardt (radio DJ) and Hind Laroussi (2008 Dutch Eurovision entrant).[8] Viewers were able to vote via telephone and SMS. In addition to the performances of the competing songs, the show featured guest performances by former Dutch Eurovision entrants Anneke Grönloh, Ben Cramer, Marga Bult, Justine Pelmelay, Marlayne, Esther Hart and Sieneke.

At Eurovision

Netherlands competed in the first half of the second semi-final of the contest, on 12 May. They failed to qualify and ended last in the second semi-final, marking the worst placing since the introduction of the semi-finals and the first last place since 1968.[9] The public awarded Netherlands 19th (last) place with 17 points and the jury awarded 18th place with 22 points.[10]
