Nataša Bekvalac

Nataša Bekvalac (Serbian Cyrillic: Наташа Беквалац, pronounced [nǎtaʃa bekʋǎːlats], born 25 September 1980) is a Serbian singer, model and actress from Novi Sad.

Life and career

The daughter of the former footballer and coach, Dragoljub Bekvalac, Nataša was born on September 25, 1980 in Novi Sad and grew up as a middle child alongside two sisters.[1] She gained public attention from an early age performing at children's music festivals as well as for appearing on the popular variety show hosted by Minja Subota, called Mužički tobogan, in 1990.[2] After graduating from a senior coaching school she decided pursue a music career by releasing her debut album Ne brini in 2001 under City Records. Regarded as a pop icon, Bekvalac has become one of the most prominent Serbian singers with five studio albums and numerous hit-songs, including "Mali signali", "Nikotin", "Kraljica novih ljubavi", "Original" and "Mala plava". On Valentine's Day 2020, she held a solo concert at the Belgrade Arena, titled S.O.S. za ljubav (SOS for Love).[3]

Beyond music, Bekvalac has also made several cameos on television and had her theatre debut in 2016 as Queen Draga Mašin in the musical Tajna Crne ruke (The Secret of Black Hand).[4] Furthermore, in 2018 she served as a judge on the children's singing show Pinkove zvezdice, replacing singer Jelena Tomašević.[5]

Bekvalac also been known for supporting LGBT rights through her public appearances and performances, thus was honored with the title of a gay icon in 2019.[6][7] Moreover, she served as the "godmother" of the 2021 Belgrade Pride, where she stated that she is not an ally to the community, but a "part of it".[8]

Bekvalac has also received widespread media attention because of her personal life. Between 2006 and 2011, she was married to Serbian waterpolo player Danilo Ikodinović, with whom she had her first daughter in 2007. Her second marriage was to handball player Ljubomir Jovanović, from 2015 till 2017. Bekvalac subsequently got married to IT entrepreneur Luka Lazukić, giving birth to her second daughter in 2018. However, she eventually filled for a divorce after getting physically assaulted by her then husband, just a month after she had given birth.[9][10]
