Composition
The song is written from the point of view of a blue-collar man named Aloysius Devandander Abercrombie, whose nickname is "Mud". When his friend steps on his prized patent leather shoes, the two get into an argument that ends with Mud killing the friend by striking him in the head with an aluminum baseball bat; the lyrics describe Mud's thought process while he attempts to bury the body.
The song samples audio from the film Deliverance, in which a character shouts, "Where are you goin', city boy?" The title refers to a common derogatory phrase; when someone's "name is mud", it implies that the person is stupid and has a bad reputation.[1]
Music video
The music video for "My Name Is Mud" was directed by Mark Kohr. It features frontman Les Claypool in character as Mud (who resembles the "Toothless Man" played by Herbert Coward in Deliverance), speaking directly to the camera as he stands over a dead body and digs a grave for it. These scenes are intercut with footage of the band performing outdoors, silhouetted by a sunset, and scenes of Bob Cock (Adam Gates) visiting a health spa, where he takes a mud bath and sits in a crowded sauna before accepting and drinking a glass of Pork Soda, referencing the album on which the song appears. The video received heavy airplay on MTV and its program Headbangers Ball,[2] and was given a positive review by Beavis and Butt-head, who have since identified this song with the band.
Woodstock '94 performance
During the band's Woodstock '94 performance, Primus were pelted with mud while performing the song.[3] About a minute into the song, the band stopped playing and Primus frontman Les Claypool told the crowd, "Well I opened a big-ass can of worms with that one, didn't I? The song is called 'My Name Is Mud' but keep the mud to yourselves, you son-of-a-bitch." He also told them that throwing mud was a "sign of small and insignificant genitalia".[4]
