On the evening of 31 January 2019, University of Hull student Liberty Squire (1997–2019) was on a night out with friends in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire.[1] She was drunk and was refused entry to a nightclub, after which her friends put her in a taxi.[1] In the early hours of 1 February, Pawel Relowicz (born 25 June 1994), who lived in Raglan Street, Hull, met her in Beverley Road.[1] He took her to Oak Road playing fields in his car, where he raped and murdered her, then threw her into the River Hull.[1] Her disappearance started Humberside Police's largest missing person search.[2] On 20 March, she was found dead in the Humber estuary.[1][2]

On 24 October, Relowicz was charged with the rape and murder of Squire.[2][4] On 12 January 2021, his trial began at Sheffield Crown Court. On 11 February, he was convicted of rape and murder.[1][2] The following day, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.[5][6]
