Mahmud Khan, the son of Nasir Khan, ruled in Kalat under the same circumstances as his father. Geographers of the late 18th century provide information about the large territory of Baluchistan with the capital Kalat. In the possession of Mahmud Khan were such cities as Zahedan, Bampur, Bam, Karachi, Quetta, Gwadar and the western region of Kerman in Kohistan.[2] Mahmud Khan had two half brothers, Mustafa Khan and Mahomed Rehim Khan, they wanted to overthrow him, but to no avail, but caused enough damage to the state's economy.[3] Mahmud Khan was a mere boy when he succeeded his father Nasir Khan, and consequently he was not able effectually to check the revolt of his chiefs. The sons of Timur Shah Durrani occupied themselves in civil war, and, when the last of them was driven from the throne by rebels, Afghanistan was divided into several states, which were not separately strong enough to enforce obedience from the Balochs.
